Hot rubberized crack sealing in Soda Springs.

Soda Springs is west of Donner Lake on Interstate 80, up and over the summit. Robert E. Sutton Co. works out of Truckee, licensed in California and Nevada, and crack sealing is one of the three things we do. Call (530) 587-4161.

What the work involves

Cracks get cleaned out and filled with hot rubberized sealant that stays flexible through the freeze and thaw cycles. It is the highest-value pavement work at this elevation, because it stops water before water becomes ice inside your pavement.

Why it matters at this elevation

A crack is a funnel. Water runs in, freezes overnight, expands about nine percent, and levers the crack wider. The next day more water fits, and the cycle repeats through both shoulders of winter. Sealing the crack shuts the funnel before the base underneath gets wet.

Summit elevation compresses everything. A shorter work window, a deeper snow load, a longer melt, and the hardest freeze and thaw pattern anywhere on our list. Crack work before the snow is worth more here than any other single thing done to the pavement.

How the job runs

Sequence matters against the calendar too. Cracks sit at their narrowest in summer heat, so material placed then gets compressed rather than stretched when winter opens things back up. That is easier on the seal and it lasts longer for it.

Soda Springs pavement specifically

Summit country pavement: small commercial, lodging, and cabin drives that spend a large share of the year under snow. The working window up here is the shortest we deal with, so anything scheduled at this elevation gets booked early rather than fit in late.

The Donner Summit Public Utility District is on our client list.

The crack pass is the piece that has to happen before winter. Everything else on a property can wait a season. Open cracks going into the snow cannot.

Soda Springs sits at roughly 6,768 feet, and the pavement around it behaves accordingly. More on the area on our Soda Springs service area page. We work the same corridor through Agate Bay, Alpine Meadows, Alpine Peaks, and the pavement guides go deeper on the physics if you want it.

Questions

Do you do crack sealing in Soda Springs?

Yes. Soda Springs is inside our regular service area out of Truckee, and crack sealing is core work for us. Call (530) 587-4161 or send a request and we will get it scoped.

Will crack sealing fix pavement that is already breaking up?

No, and we will say so plainly. Surface work protects sound pavement. If an area has failed down into the base it needs repair or replacement, which is paving work, and we do not pave. We will tell you which areas are which.

What makes mountain pavement work different?

The season and the freeze cycle. Four working months instead of eight, snow load and plow traffic all winter, and a daily freeze and thaw swing that pries at anything left open. Maintenance schedules that work in the valley run behind up here.
