Hot rubberized crack sealing in Truckee.

Crews reach the historic downtown, the railyard district, the Highway 267 side and the Glenshire turnoff inside a few minutes, which is why in town work often gets looked at the same week it is called in. Robert E. Sutton Co. works out of Truckee, licensed in California and Nevada, and crack sealing is one of the three things we do. Call (530) 587-4161.

What the work involves

Cracks get cleaned out and filled with hot rubberized sealant that stays flexible through the freeze and thaw cycles. It is the highest-value pavement work at this elevation, because it stops water before water becomes ice inside your pavement.

Why it matters at this elevation

Hot rubberized sealant stays flexible, which is the whole reason it works here. Pavement expands in the afternoon sun and contracts on cold nights, so cracks open and close constantly. A rigid filler breaks its bond the first hard winter. Flexible sealant moves with the pavement and keeps holding.

This is the low end of the range we work, which usually means an earlier start and a slightly longer season. What it does not mean is easy conditions. The daily freeze and thaw swing at this altitude is what pries pavement apart, and it runs here the same as on the ridge.

How the job runs

Not every crack is worth sealing and we will say which. Hairlines get handled by a sealcoat. Openings from about a quarter inch to an inch are the sweet spot. Anything spread into a connected web is telling you about the base, and that is a different conversation.

Truckee pavement specifically

Truckee pavement runs the whole range. Downtown commercial lots that see delivery trucks and winter foot traffic, older residential drives on the streets off Donner Pass Road, and district facilities on the public side. That mix means a season here is rarely all one kind of work.

Truckee is also one of the coldest incorporated towns in California, which is exactly why pavement maintenance was worth specializing in here.

Cracks here get treated as the priority item rather than the add-on, because the water they let in is what takes pavement apart at this elevation.

Truckee sits at roughly 5,800 feet, and the pavement around it behaves accordingly. More on the area on our Truckee service area page. We work the same corridor through Agate Bay, Alpine Meadows, Alpine Peaks, and the pavement guides go deeper on the physics if you want it.

Questions

Are you licensed for work in Truckee?

Yes. We hold California license 510637 and Nevada license 29573, classification A-8, which covers both sides of the state line around the north end of the lake.

Do I need anything done before the crack sealing?

Not much on your end. We clean each crack out first — blowing debris and loose material from inside it — and let any moisture dry before the hot rubberized sealant goes in. If the surrounding surface is badly raveled we’ll flag that, but the crack work itself needs little prep from you.

What makes mountain pavement work different?

The season and the freeze cycle. Four working months instead of eight, snow load and plow traffic all winter, and a daily freeze and thaw swing that pries at anything left open. Maintenance schedules that work in the valley run behind up here.
