What Happens at the Pavement Base: Subgrade Explained
Most pavement failures start below the asphalt. Here is how base and subgrade work, why they fail at elevation, and what that means for you.
The layers under your asphalt
Pavement is a system, not a slab. At the bottom is the subgrade, which is the native soil the whole thing sits on. Above that is usually a base course of crushed aggregate, sometimes with a subbase layer beneath it. On top is the asphalt itself, which is the thinnest layer in the stack.
Each layer spreads load onto the one below. A wheel load concentrated on a small contact patch gets distributed across a wider and wider area as it moves down through the layers. By the time it reaches the soil, the pressure is low enough that the soil can carry it.
The asphalt is the wear surface and the waterproofing. It is not the structure. That distinction explains almost every pavement problem an owner will ever encounter.
How a base fails
Water is the mechanism in nearly every case. Aggregate base works because the stones lock against each other. Introduce water and the fine material turns to slurry, the stones lose interlock, and the layer loses stiffness. Traffic then pumps the wet fines around and the base moves under load.
Freezing makes it worse in both directions. Water in the base expands as it freezes and pushes the stones apart, reducing density. On thaw, that loosened material is saturated and weak, which is why spring is the most damaging season for pavement structure.
Subgrade soil matters enormously. Clean, granular, free-draining soil is forgiving. Silt and clay hold water, lose strength when wet, and are the soils that form ice lenses and heave.
Reading base failure from the surface
You cannot see the base, but it tells on itself. Alligator cracking in loaded areas is fatigue from lost support. Rutting in wheel paths means deformation below the surface. Depressions that appear over time mean the base or subgrade is consolidating.
Pumping is the clearest signal there is. If water and gray fines squirt up through a crack when a wheel rolls over it, the base is saturated and moving. Pavement that flexes visibly under a truck is telling you the same thing.
Contrast that with distresses that live only in the top layer. Oxidation, block cracking, raveling, and single thermal cracks are surface problems on a sound structure. Those are the ones maintenance can genuinely address.

If your problem is at the base, no surface product solves it. The material has to be excavated, the base rebuilt and compacted, drainage corrected, and new asphalt placed. That is paving and grading work and we do not do it. We would rather tell you that on the first visit than take money for a coating that will not last.
Where surface maintenance earns its keep is in preventing base failure in the first place. Sealed cracks keep water out. A tight surface keeps water from soaking in. Quick answers
How thick should the base be?
It depends on soil conditions, traffic loads, drainage, and frost depth, and it is an engineering determination. Cold-climate roads generally need more section than the same road would need in a mild climate.
Can a failing base be fixed without removing the pavement?
There are techniques such as full depth reclamation and injection methods, and they are all specialized paving contractor work. Nothing applied to the surface repairs a base.
Does the base under a driveway need to be as good as under a road?
It needs to match the loads it will carry. Driveways see lighter traffic, so sections are typically thinner. Drainage requirements do not relax, though. Wet base fails at any thickness.
