What to Watch on Your Pavement During Winter

Where ice forms every time

Note the spots that glaze over after every thaw. Those are the low points and the places meltwater crosses, and they are where the pavement is being worked hardest all winter.

A photograph on your phone with the date is enough. Come June that map tells us where to look before we have even walked the property.

Where the plow catches

Watch for gouges, torn edges, and places the operator consistently has trouble. A blade that catches the same spot every storm is telling you there is a raised edge or a defect there.

Those spots are usually cheap to fix in summer and expensive to ignore, because a gouge holds water and water is what takes pavement apart.

What you can do mid-winter

Not much, and that is fine. Keep drains and culverts clear as they thaw so meltwater moves. Go easy on deicer, using the minimum that does the job. If a pothole opens, cold patch keeps it from growing until it can be addressed properly.

Do not let a contractor talk you into sealing or crack work in the middle of winter. The material will not bond and you will pay to have it done again.

Bring the list to spring

Everything you noted becomes the scope of the spring walk. Owners who arrive with a list and photos get more accurate advice and a tighter estimate than owners describing it from memory.
