Kingvale sits west of Donner Summit along Interstate 80, a small community on the west slope with cabins, small commercial pavement, and freeway-adjacent access.
The west slope catches heavy snow and holds it, but the elevation here is lower than the summit proper, so the melt comes earlier and the working window opens sooner than it does up at Norden.
Getting to Kingvale from the yard
Kingvale is a straight run west from Truckee on Interstate 80, down the west side of the summit. Simple access in summer, and worth scheduling early because the season up this way is short.
What Kingvale pavement is up against
Around 6,200 feet the pavement carries snow cover for a long stretch and then spends spring cycling through melt and refreeze. That cycle, more than the cold itself, is what widens cracks and softens the base. Getting the surface tight before the snow arrives is worth more than anything done after it leaves.
